SELINGSROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna's baseball team
managed a split in Saturday's doubleheader with Catholic by
winning game two 3-0. The Crusaders dropped a close game one,
6-5.
In the second contest, SU (14-21, 3-12) started off the bottom
of the first with a single to right center from Ty
Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa. / Upper Dauphin Area). He
later scored off a throwing error by Catholic (23-13, 10-5) to give
the Crusaders the lead 1-0.
Jared Musilli (Branchville, N.J. / High Point
Regional) started the bottom of the fifth with a walk and
later scored thanks to a Raubenstine triple to right center with
two outs to increase the lead 2-0.
SU tacked on another run in the sixth to go ahead 3-0.
Dan Wing (West Chester, Pa. / Unionville /
Catawba) and Ethan Rieker (Lancaster, Pa. /
Manheim Twp.) both ripped singles and Zach Place
(Towanda, Pa. / Towanda) doubled down the left field line
to score Wing.
Closer Matt Smith (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. / Wyoming
Seminary) made the end interesting as he loaded the bases
in the top of the seventh, but ended the Catholic rally with a
crucial strike out for his fifth save of the year.
Casey Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock /
IUP) earned the win, going six strong innings while only
give up one hit. He also struck out a pair, for his second victory
of the year.
SU finished with six hits in game two, led by Raubenstine who
went 2-for-3.
In the early game, Susquehanna had a pair of home runs but also
gave up two long balls in the 6-5 loss.
The Crusaders jumped ahead 1-0 in the second when Rieker blasted
a solo shot to left field, his fourth of the season and
13th of his career. Catholic tied the game at 1-1 with
an RBI single in the third.
The Cardinals gained the lead 2-1 after another run scoring
single in the fifth. But SU plated four runs in the bottom of the
frame. Place cracked a solo homer to left, his first career to tie
the game at 2-2.
Nick Testo (Mount Airy, Md. / Avalon) followed
with a single and Ken Kayama [Koto-Ku, Japan / Solebury
(Pa.)] doubled to deep center field to score Testo and
take the lead 3-2. Pat Jennings (Essex Falls, N.J. / West
Essex) later picked up an RBI single and Wing blasted a
run-scoring double to right center as SU went ahead 5-2.
Catholic scored three runs during the top of the sixth,
including a two-run shot to left, tying the game at 5-5. The
Cardinals tacked on another in the seventh with another long ball
to claim the lead 6-5.
The Crusaders had a runner in scoring position in the bottom of
the seventh but two strike outs ended the game.
Place got the starting nod, going 5 1/3 innings, scattering 10
hits and striking out seven Cardinals.
The Crusaders host non-conference opponent Lebanon Valley on
Wednesday, April 25 at 4:00 p.m. Three members of the team will be
honored for Senior Day.
