SELINSGROVE, Pa. – It was a tale of two games as the
Susquehanna softball squad used four runs in game one against
Lebanon Valley to win a pitchers' duel and then erupted for
17 runs in a 17-1 game two victory
Alyssa Cantalini (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic
Secondary) and Kathryn Gilbert (Mechanicsburg,
Pa./Cumberland Valley) had two hits apiece in game one
while Sam LaCoe (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington
Heights) collected two RBI. Starting pitcher Sarah
Hoffman (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) went the
distance and gave up just two runs on seven hits and struck out
two.
The Flying Dutchmen struck first in game one, scoring solo runs in
the first and second innings. That remained the score the sixth
when the Crusaders broke through for all four of their runs in the
game. Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks
East), LaCoe all had RBIs in the decisive inning.
Hoffman retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings
to preserve the SU win.
Game two's outcome was never in doubt, in stark contrast to
the opening contest. Susquehanna pounded out 15 hits, led by three
from Lisa Finizio (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills),
Cantalini and Gilbert. Bridget Rafter
(Highlands, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) also added five
RBI.
Like Hoffman, starter Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council
Rock North) went the distance and gave up just one run on
five hits.
The Crusaders did not actually score until the fourth inning when
put three runs on the board on five hits. They then broke the game
open with a 14-run fifth inning courtesy of 10 hits and a Lebanon
Valley error. Back-to-back triples from Lauren Gilbert
(Mechanicsville, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Finizio opened
the inning and the team never looked back.
The Flying Dutchmen scraped together a run in the bottom of the
fifth but left the bases loaded to end the game.
Susquehanna returns home to host Scranton on Saturday in a
doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The team will honor its four senior
members between games.
