FREDERICK, Md. – The Susquehanna men's lacrosse team
jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Hood and never looked back en route
to a 9-3 road victory in the squad's final game of the
regular season.
The Crusaders now await the results of the remaining Landmark
Conference matchups this weekend to learn their postseason
future.
On Friday afternoon, SU (9-7) held a distinct, 45-27 edge in shots
while the defense forced 39 Blazers (4-13) turnovers.
Individually, Luke
Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison) led the Crusaders with
a three-goal effort while Dustin Breakey (Mechanicsburg,
Pa./Cumberland Valley) finished with two scores to go
along with an assist. Tim
Pastore (Ridgewood, N.J/Ridgewood) also added a
game-high two assists.
Starting goalie Will
Torrence (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) played all
but the final 3:40 of action and gave up only two goals and made 14
saves while facing 25 shots. Jared Knowlton (North Salem, N.J./Kent School)
played the final minutes of the game.
The game was scoreless for the first six minutes until Pete
Doelp (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) got the Crusaders
on the board at the 9:11 mark. Just two minutes later, Delavan
found the back of the net for a 2-0 SU lead, which remained the
score at the end of the period.
Hood scored the lone goal in the second quarter as Susquehanna
headed into halftime holding onto a slim, 2-1 lead.
The third quarter was an entirely different story as the Crusaders
netted five goals while limiting the Blazers to just one. The teams
swapped goals within the first three minutes of the quarter and at
the 10-minute mark, Breakey scored for the 4-2 Susquehanna
lead.
That goal was the first of four-straight SU goals to end the
quarter, with the final score coming from Breakey with just 44
seconds remaining to make it a 7-2 game heading into the final 15
minutes of action.
Delavan struck early in the period, netting the Crusaders'
eighth goal of the game 75 seconds into the period to make it 8-2.
He scored his second-straight goal four-plus minutes later to make
it a seven-goal game (9-2).
The Blazers did manage to net a goal with just 52 seconds left but
SU still gave up just two goals over the final 30 minutes of play.
In addition, the three total goals allowed are tied for the
second-fewest scored by a SU opponent this spring.
