WASHINGTON, Pa. – A strong second half helped propel to the
Susquehanna men's lacrosse team to a 16-10 win at first-year
Landmark Conference opponent Washington & Jefferson on Friday
afternoon.
An evenly matched first half was followed by a second half in which
SU (6-6, 2-2) held W&J (2-9, 0-3) to only four goals, all of
which came in the final two-plus minutes of the game.
Despite the late scoring from the Presidents, the SU offense had
already provided enough scoring to secure the win. Dustin
Breakey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Luke Delavan (Madison,
N.J./Madison) and Austen
Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison) all
picked up hat tricks in the victory. Breakey also chipped in a
game-high four assists for a seven-point performance. Delavan and
Lein each recorded an assist.
Goalie Jordan Daney (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower
Merion) played all but the final minute of the game,
making eight saves in the process. Anthony Maiorella (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain
Lakes) played the final 60 seconds.
The Crusaders had 48 shots to W&J's 27 and Trae
Humphreys (Wilmington, Del./Sanford) dominated on
face-offs, winning 16-of-19 on the afternoon.
To open the game, W&J out-scored SU 4-2 in the first quarter.
Less than two minutes into the game, the Presidents got on the
board before Delavan was able to knot the game at one with a goal
at the 6:35 mark.
Just one minute later, Tylere
Fritts (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) handed the Crusaders
their first lead of the game but W&J ended the quarter with
three unanswered goals to take the 4-2 edge.
Just two minutes into the second half, Delavan was able to cut that
lead to one (4-3) with a goal off an assist from Tim
Pastore (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood). Reid
LeDonne (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) then made it
back-to-back goals with a score with 10:10 left in the opening
half, knotting the game at four.
Two more consecutive goals put SU ahead 6-4 with just under four
minutes left in the quarter. Unfortunately, the Presidents ended
the half with back-to-back goals themselves, making it a tie game
(6-6) at the midway point of the game.
Susquehanna responded by dominating the third quarter, netting six
goals while holding W&J scoreless. Breakey accounted for two of
those goals as he scored two straight goals that made it 11-6 at
the 3:42 mark of the period. Delavan capped off the scoring to give
SU a six-goal advantage (12-6) heading into the final 15 minutes of
play.
Lein continued the scoring for the Crusaders with a goal barely a
minute into the final quarter. Nearly nine passed without another
goal for either team before Carmen Raroha (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace)
got in on the scoring action and made it 14-6 with only 4:50
remaining.
Breakey padded the lead with a goal two minutes later and while the
Presidents were able to score four goals over the final 2:16 of
play, it was too little too late as the Crusaders came away with
the 16-8 win.
SU is back in action for its final two home games of the regular
season beginning on April 11 to host Marywood at 4 p.m.
