SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Susquehanna bats just could not come
up with enough key hits to take down Scranton as the Royals took
both games of Saturday's Landmark Conference doubleheader. SU
dropped game one 4-2 and fell 7-2 in the nightcap.
The Crusaders (12-14, 2-6) combined for just 11 hits in the two
games. Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin
Area) and Nick Kennedy
(Brookeville, Md./Good Council) accounted for more than
half of those hits with three hits apiece on the day.
In the series opener, Zach Place (Towanda,
Pa./Towanda) tossed the first four innings and gave up
five runs, three of which were earned, but also walked seven
batters. Three relievers tossed one inning apiece to close out the
game with Spencer Hotaling (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove
Area) and Tyler Della Badia (Scotch Plains,
N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) not giving up a hit in their
respective innings.
The Royals went up 1-0 in the second before SU tied it in the
bottom half of the inning on a Kyle Semmel (Burlington
Twp., N.J./Holy Cross HS) RBI triple to right center. The
Crusaders tacked on a second run in the third thanks to a
Dan Wing (West Chester,
Pa./Unionville/Catawba) single that plated Jared
Musilli (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional).
Unfortunately, that marked the final scoring of the game for
Susquehanna. Scranton broke through for all four of its run in the
fifth thanks to just one hit, one error and two walks.
SU was retired in order to end the game.
In game two, Brian Wendig (West Chester, Pa./Malvern
Prep) lasted 5.1 innings but gave up four runs, none of
which were earned, before giving way to Matt Lottes
(Muttontown, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran), who surrendered
the final three Scranton runs.
SU again scored first with a two-run third inning. The first run
scored thanks to a fielding error with Ethan Rieker
(Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) driving in the second run on
a sac fly.
The Royals went up 4-2 thanks to yet another four-run inning, this
time thanks in part to two and two SU errors in the fifth.
With the Crusaders still down by only two heading into the top of
the seventh, Scranton put the game out of reach by scoring three
runs on five hits, all credited to Lottes, to pad their lead to
five runs (7-2).
SU and Scranton wrap-up the three-game series on Monday with one,
nine-inning game at 3 p.m.
