SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Playing in the final tune-up leading up
to this weekend's Landmark Conference Tournament, the
Susquehanna softball team split its Tuesday doubleheader against
Misericordia. The Crusaders took game one 4-0 before falling 3-0 in
the finale.
In the opening game win, Allison Cullen (Branchburg,
N.J./Immaculata) went all seven innings for Susquehanna
(25-12) and gave up just four hits while striking out four in the
shutout. At the plate, SU managed only five hits, two of which came
from Kathryn Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley), but timely hits and solid base-running provided
enough offense.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the
Crusaders plated two runs on one hit, a Gilbert RBI single, and one
Cougars (25-15) error.
SU put together another two-run inning in the fifth on a
Lisa Finizio (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) single
through the right side that scored Alyssa Cantalini
(Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic Secondary). A RBI
groundout from Brianna Murphy (Hazlet, N.J./Mater
Dei) allowed Finizio to score for the 4-0 score.
Cullen allowed only one base runner over her final two innings of
work to pick up the win.
Game two was another pitcher's duel and unfortunately
Susquehanna fell on the losing side of this one. Three pitchers
combined to give scatter just three runs on four hits but the SU
bats were blanked, picking up only one hit.
Misericordia scored a run in the fifth on two singles and added
two runs in the sixth without a hit as two errors and a RBI
groundout helped contribute to the two runs.
The Crusaders were retired in order to end the game.
The Crusaders open the two-day, double-elimination Landmark
Conference Tournament, hosted by SU, on Friday with an 11 a.m. game
against Catholic.
