SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna coaching staff could
not have asked more from its starting pitchers as Morgan
Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) and Sarah
Hoffman (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) combined to
surrender one run in two games. Unfortunately, the SU bats could
only propel the Crusaders to a split on the opening day of the
Landmark Conference Tournament.
The Crusaders will now play tomorrow at 11 a.m. against the winner
from the 9 a.m. game between Scranton (26-9) and Catholic (22-15).
The non-winner of that game will be eliminated.
SU (25-13) came out winners in the team's opening game
against Catholic as Alyssa Cantalini's (Kitchener,
Ontario/St. David Catholic Secondary) fourth-inning solo
shot proved to be the difference as SU won 1-0. Lewis went the
distance and scattered six hits over seven innings with four
strikeouts.
The Crusaders had just three hits all game, including the ultimate
solo homer from Cantalini.
Game two was a similar story but this time it was Moravian that
came out the victors in another one-run decision, defeating Hoffman
and Susquehanna 1-0 in eight innings. Both teams had just five hits
with Cantalini picking up two more for SU.
Hoffman struck out two and gave up one run on five hits.
Each team put a runner on base in the seventh but neither crossed
the plate, sending the game into extra innings.
In Moravian's half of the eighth, a one-out single followed
by a wild pitch and another single gave the Greyhounds a 1-0
lead.
Cantilini opened the bottom half of the inning with a double to
left center but was left stranded.
