SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna's field hockey squad dropped a close home match to non-conference opponent King's (Pa.) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The loss is the fourth straight one-goal defeat for the Crusaders.
The first half yielded no score, with the Crusaders outshooting the Lady Monarchs 11-4 and holding a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Tiffany Collins (Hanover, Md. / Meade) had a great scoring chance in the 23rd minute of the opening period as she hit the post with a blast from 15 yards out.
The Lady Monarchs (4-2) scored the first goal of the match in the 44th minute of the second half, notching the tally directly after a penalty corner.
The Crusaders (2-4) registered the equalizer in the 59th minute when senior Nicole Solino (Madison, N.J. / Madison) found junior Allison Abey (Ewing, N.J. / Ewing) on a quick pass after a penalty corner, tying the game at 1-1.
But King's ruined the Crusaders' momentum, scoring in the 67th minute after a scramble in the box found its way into the back of the net.
Overall, SU outshot the Lady Monarchs 21-18 and held a slight advantage in corners, 9-8.
Freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Rothman (Norristown, Pa. / Methacton) suffered the defeat in her first collegiate start, recording eight saves on 18 shots.
The Crusaders will look to end their losing skid as they host Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
