WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Susquehanna men's soccer team
captured its ninth win of the season courtesy of a 1-0 road shutout
of Catholic on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
Patrick Fry (Denver, Colo./Colorado Academy)
accounted for the ultimate game-winning goal as he struck with just
under 20 minutes to play in the first half and the SU defense took
care of the rest as the Crusaders (9-1-0, 2-0-0) picked up their
sixth shutout of the season and second Landmark Conference
victory.
Fry finished the game with two shots, the only player on either
team to take multiple shots.
The teams were relatively evenly matched in the statistics with SU
taking seven shots to the Cardinals' (6-4, 1-1) five.
However, only two of Catholic's shots were on goal and
Susquehanna's Matt Salsman
(Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) came up with
saves on both. There were only three corner kicks in the match with
SU accounting for two.
Scoring chances were at a premium for the majority of the game but
with 25: 12 on the clock, David Trank
(Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) found Fry who put a
shot past Catholic goalie Torsten Meuschke to put his squad up 1-0.
It remained a 1-0 game at the midway point of the contest.
There were only a combined five shots over the final 45 minutes of
play but without a shot from either team for the final 23 minutes
of play, the 1-0 Crusader lead was safe.
SU return to action on Oct. 2 with a 5 p.m. game at Penn
College.
