SELINSGROVE, Pa. – After a one-year absence, the Battle of
the Boot trophy is back in the hands of the Susquehanna men's
soccer team as the Crusaders defeated Lycoming 4-0 on Wednesday
night.
SU (3-0) avenged an overtime loss to Lycoming one year ago and the
teams have now split the last four Battle of the Boot meetings.
With the win, Susquehanna improves to 3-0 on the season.
Four different players accounted for the four Susquehanna goals as
SU out-shot Lycoming (1-1) by a dominating 27-2 mark. Nearly half
of those Crusader shots were on goal and they connected on their
first three shots of the night.
Goalie Matt Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove
Area) was forced into action just once all night as the
Warriors took just one shot in each half and only one was on
goal.
It took the Crusaders just seven minutes to get on the board with a
goal from Joe DeLuca (Freehold, N.J./St. John
Vianney) that handed SU the early 1-0 lead. Just nine
minutes later David Trank (Mendham, N.J./West Morris
Mendham) made it a 2-0 Susquehanna advantage off an assist
from John Arnold (Mechanicsburg,
Pa./Mechanicsburg), who was taking one of SU's eight
corner kicks of the half.
Daniel Sosa (Columbia, Pa./York Catholic) padded
that lead with a goal not even three minutes after Trank's
score and that 3-0 lead stood as the teams headed into
halftime.
It remained 3-0 until, with just over 18 minutes to play in the
game, Ian Greene (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna
Beach) added an insurance goal for the 4-0 Susquehanna
advantage.
The SU defense prevented Lycoming from putting together any serious
scoring threat to clinch the shutout victory.
The Crusaders take to the road for the first time this season on
Sept. 8-9 with two games at the York Tournament.
