SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's basketball
team gave up 42 second-half points to visiting Catholic University
and ultimately fell to the 18th-ranked Cardinals 75-49
on Wednesday night in Selinsgrove.
SU (6-10, 1-4) found itself down by just eight points at halftime
but was out-scored 41-23 in the second half as Catholic (15-1, 4-1)
ran away with the win.
While the Cardinals shot only 23 percent at the free throw line,
they countered by shooting better than 46 percent from both the
floor and three-point range while Susquehanna sank only 30 percent
of its field goal attempts.
Senior Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland,
Pa./Wallenpaupack) fell two points shy of a double-double
with eight points to go along with her game-high 12 rebounds.
Shannon Grunwald (Neshanic Station,
N.J./Somerville) chipped in 11 points, nine of which came
from beyond the arc, and Mariah Monahan (Towanda,
Pa./Towanda Area) added 10 points, two assists and two
steals.
While SU never held a lead in the first half, the Crusaders never
let Catholic take more than a seven-point lead for the first
10-plus minutes of action. In fact, Susquehanna found itself down
by just two points (11-9) after a Monahan jumper at the 11:46 mark
of the half.
Just eight minutes later, Palazzi cut what had at one point been a
nine-point Catholic lead to just four points with a layup that made
it 26-22. It wasn't until 50 seconds remained that the
Cardinals went up by double digits, 34-24, but Jackie
Clarke (Mahopec, N.Y./Marina Regina) ended the half with a
layup to keep it just an eight-point game at halftime (34-26).
Unfortunately, the Crusaders went the first seven minutes of the
second half without scoring a single point while Catholic upped its
lead to 19 (45-26). With less than 10 minutes remaining, the
Cardinals had increased that margin to 20 points (56-36).
That lead ballooned to 27 (63-36) at around the five-minute mark
and effectively ended any chance at a Crusaders comeback.
SU remains at home to host Landmark Conference opponent Moravian on
Saturday at 2 p.m.
