BALTIMORE, Md. – A game that featured 11 lead changes
ultimately went against the Susquehanna men's basketball team
as SU fell 68-58 to Marymount (Va.) at the 22nd Blue Jay
Invitational, hosted by Johns Hopkins University.
The Crusaders (3-8) will now face the non-winner from
Wednesday's nightcap between Johns Hopkins and Eastern at 5
p.m.
Just one player netted double figures for SU as J.T. Wilson
(Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) chipped in 13
points, 12 of which came from three-point land. Mike
Perillo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) led all players with nine
assists, just one shy of the tournament record.
In addition, center Harley Sellinger (Mill Hall,
Pa./Central Mountain) started and appeared in his first
game of the 2012-13 season after spending the 2012 fall semester
abroad in Spain. He finished with four points and five boards in 18
minutes of action.
As a team, Susquehanna shot nearly 41 percent from three-point
range but the Saints (4-8) countered with a 46.7 percent showing
from beyond the arc while also shooting better than 48 percent from
the field and 84.6 percent at the free throw line. On the flip
side, SU shot 68.8 percent from the charity stripe.
Eight minutes into the game, Josh Miller's
(Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) three handed the
Crusaders a five-point edge (18-13) in what would be their largest
lead of the game. With 8:27 on the clock, freshman Brandon
Hedley (Silver Spring, Md./Salisbury Prep) sank two free
throws to keep SU ahead by one, 20-19, but that ultimately marked
the team's final lead of the half.
By the time the first half wound down, Susquehanna was down by
eight, 38-30, after a 6-2 Marymount run ended the half.
The Saints' first possession of the second half, a
three-pointer by Jesse Konadu, handed them their first double-digit
lead of the game (41-30). They remained ahead by 10, 49-39, until
nine unanswered SU points pulled the Crusaders back within just one
of the lead (49-48) with 11:38 still to play.
On SU's very next possession, Luke Cable (York,
Pa./West York) drained a three to give his squad its first
lead (51-49) since nearly midway through the opening half.
Miller's layup with 5:57 on the clock helped Susquehanna
maintain a lead at 57-54 but Marymount countered with a 10-0 run to
grab a 64-57 lead with just 2:30 remaining. The Crusaders were
unable to pull any closer than six points of the lead at 64-58 over
the remaining minutes of the game.
