SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Fifteen three-pointers were not enough to
lead the Susquehanna men's basketball team to a win over
visiting Juniata as the Crusaders fell 86-70 to the Eagles on
Wednesday night.
SU (6-12, 2-5) shot 47 percent (15-of-32) from three-point land
but could not counter a 55 percent effort (11-of-20) from the
Eagles who were led in scoring by Brian Scholly's 34 points
– 18 of which were from long distance. Scholly was one of
four Juniata players to net double digit points.
Freshman Brandon Hedley (Silver Spring, Md./Salisbury
Prep) accounted five of those 15 Susquehanna three
pointers as he finished with a team-high 17 points. Harley
Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) added 13
points and seven boards while Mike Perillo (Holmdel,
N.J./Holmdel) led SU with eight assists to complement his
six points and three boards.
Unfortunately, Juniata (13-5, 5-2) was able to score 20 points off
the Crusaders' 14 turnovers and had 22 points in the paint to
SU's 16.
The game opened in Juniata's favor as it took the Eagles
less than five minutes to build a double-digit lead, 15-3. As
the half hit the midway point, SU found itself trailing by 15
(23-9) before a J.T. Wilson (Sparta, N.J./Pope John
XXIII) trey cut the lead to nine (24-15) with less than
nine minutes remaining in the half.
For the next seven minutes, the Eagles' lead wavered between
eight and 11 points until the Crusaders closed out the final 2:55
of the action by scoring eight of the final 13 points of the half
to go into halftime down 10 (44-34). Twenty-one of the
Crusaders' 34 points in the half came from three-point
range.
Juniata was able to maintain a double-digit lead for nearly all of
the first 10-plus minutes of the second half until a Luke
Cable (York, Pa./West York) three made it a three-point
game (63-56). The Eagles went back up by 12 just three minutes
later, however, and maintained that double-digit lead for the
remainder of the game.
Perillo's three at the 2:01 mark did keep it a 10-point game
and left SU with plenty of time to make a comeback, but five free
throws and an Alex Raymond three in the waning seconds sealed the
Juniata win.
The men return to the court on Saturday with a 4 p.m. game at
Drew.
