TOWSON, Md. – Seniors Shannon Grunwald (Neshanic
Station, N.J. / Somerville) and Gina Palazzi
(Newfoundland, Pa. / Wallenpaupack Area) both scored in
double figures to lead Susquehanna's women's basketball
team to a 55-49 conference win at Goucher.
Grunwald scored a game-high 17 points, shooting 6-for-10 from
the field and added eight rebounds and four assists. Palazzi
recorded a double-double, netting 13 points to go along with a
contest-best 12 boards. She also added three helpers and one block
on the night for the Crusaders (7-13, 2-7).
Mariah Monahan (Towanda, Pa. / Towanda Area)
chipped in five points, five assists and three steals and
Jackie Clarke (Mahopec, N.Y. / Marina
Regina) grabbed eight rebounds for SU.
It took SU 60 seconds to jump out to a 4-0 lead and after six
minutes of play, the Crusaders went ahead 12-5 on an
Ainsley Rossitto (Rocky Hill, Conn. /
Kingswood-Oxford) jump shot.
Goucher (5-14, 1-8) went seven-plus minutes without scoring a
single point and the Gophers found themselves trailing by seven,
14-7, with only 8:33 left in the first half.
Sharnell Huff made it a six-point game, 16-10, with just over six
minutes to play in the first half but the Crusaders proceeded to
end the period by netting 14 of the final 21 points scored to take
a 30-17 lead into the locker room.
SU increased its advantage to a game-high 18 (40-22) after a
Candence Cannady (Chicago, Ill. / Whitney M. Young
Magnet) layup with 15:36 left in the game.
The Gophers responded with a 10-0 run to get within nine (49-40)
with less than five minutes remaining. SU jumped back ahead by 10
points after a Grunwald jumper but yet again Goucher countered with
a quick 6-0 spurt to trail by only four (53-49) with 1:16 left.
Palazzi iced a pair of free throws with 22 ticks on the clock,
though, to seal the win for the Crusaders.
The women return home to host Scranton on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Saturday marks Susquehanna's annual Pepsi Day with free hot
dogs and soda to all in attendance.
