SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A close first half and a second half full
of runs eventually sent Susquehanna women's basketball team
to overtime against Drew. Unfortunately the Rangers blanked SU in
that extra session to take down the Crusaders 62-52 in
Selinsgrove.
SU (5-7, 0-2) led by 13 points as late as midway through the
second half before a 28-5 Rangers run to cap off the game,
including overtime, handed the Crusaders their second Landmark
Conference loss of the season.
Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa. / Loyalsock
Twp.) finished the game with a team-high 14 points on
6-of-10 shooting while Mariah Monahan
(Towanda, Pa. / Towanda Area) chipped in 13 points, three
assists and two steals. Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa. /
Wallenpaupack Area), meanwhile, fell only two points shy
of a double-double with eight points and 10 boards.
The Rangers (5-8, 1-1) had 11 second-chance points to SU's
five and managed 18 points off of the Crusaders' 24
turnovers. Erin Howard led all scorers with 18 points.
A back-and-forth first half saw neither team hold more than a
four-point edge at any point. One of those four-point leads came
early in the game when two Monahan free throws made it 4-0 just 75
seconds into the action. The first tie of the afternoon was at the
16:15 mark when Drew knotted it at six-all.
Midway through the half, SU again took a four-point lead, 18-14,
on a Williams layup but from that point on, neither Drew nor
Susquehanna held more than a three-point edge. The half ended on a
Monahan free throw that made it 24-24 at halftime.
The second half started out in a similar back-and-forth fashion
until the Crusaders went on a 13-0 run that made it 47-34 with
10:04 remaining in the game.
Drew chipped away and cut that lead to just three (47-44) at the
five-minute mark of the game. Courtney Stevens then knotted the
game at 48 on a jumper with just over four minutes left in the
game, capping off a 14-1 run.
The Rangers went up 50-49 on their next possession but Monahan
countered by draining a three to erase that lead. With 50 seconds
on the clock, it remained at tie game, 52-52, and that remained the
score at the end of regulation to force overtime.
SU was shut out in the extra session by a 10-0 margin to fall by a
final score of 62-52.
The women are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 9 when they host
Goucher at 7 p.m.
