SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna field hockey team trailed
Catholic by just one goal at halftime of Saturday's
conference game but could not mount a comeback, ultimately falling
3-0 to the Cardinals.
SU (6-8, 0-4) was held without a shot for the entire first half
but finished with nine shots in the second half. Catholic (8-4,
3-1) fired off 15 shots in the game, 11 of which came in the
opening half.
Emily Novakovich (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook) and
Katherine Millett (Auburn, Maine/North Yarmouth
Academy) each finished with two shots for the Crusaders
and goalie Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry,
Pa./Northern) had six saves in 70 minutes of work.
Despite the offensive struggles, SU's defense held the
Cardinals off the scoreboard for the first 33-plus minutes of the
half. Unfortunately Catholic was able to break that tie on an
unassisted Maura Campbell goal with just 1:11 left in the period,
which remained the score as the teams went into halftime.
This time it took Catholic only six minutes of action to get on
the board and went up 2-0 with 41:10 on the clock. The Crusaders
stayed within two goals of the lead for the next 28 minutes before
the Cardinals were able to tack on an insurance goal for a 3-0 lead
with only 38 seconds remaining.
Susquehanna returns home to host Wilkes on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
