SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Despite an early second-half goal from Patrick Fry (Denver, Colo./Colorado Academy), the Susquehanna men's soccer team could not come back from a 1-0 halftime deficit and fell 2-1 to Landmark Conference opponent Catholic.
SU (7-4-1, 2-2-0) actually out-shot the Cardinals (8-3-2, 2-0-1) 14-11 and had six corner kicks to Catholic's four but the Cardinals were able to take advantage of their scoring opportunities to come away with the conference win on what marked Senior Day for the Crusader men.
Andrew Murphy (Natick, Mass./Natick) finished with a game-high five shots while Fry added two, including his second-half score. Susquehanna goalie Matt Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area), thanks to the play of his defense, was forced to make only one save all afternoon.
SU's defense held the Cardinals to just one shot on goal in the opening half. Unfortunately, that one shot came in the form of a goal when a cross from Kevin Romano found Hunter Horvath, who headed it into the goal for a 1-0 Catholic lead just 15:28 into the action.
That marked the only goal of the half, though, and Susquehanna found itself still down by one at halftime.
Just 12 minutes into the second half, Catholic was able to pad its lead to two goals after Kevin Romano found the back of the net for his second and third points of the afternoon. That momentum lasted only 32 seconds because Fry fired a shot from midfield that got past Cardinals goalie Torsten Meuschke to trim Catholic's lead back to one at 2-1 with roughly 37 minutes still to play.
Both teams had scoring chances over the remainder of the game, including a shot from Murphy at the 86:39 mark that sailed high. None of those shots translated into goals, however, as Catholic was able to hang for the 2-1 victory.
