SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's soccer team
could not get past Landmark Conference opponent Catholic and fell
3-1 to the Cardinals on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in
Selinsgrove. The team's seven seniors were honored in a
pregame ceremony.
After falling into an early hole, Kate Wiley's
(Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) first-half goal briefly tied
the game but Catholic (8-6-0, 2-1-0) regained a 2-1 lead and never
looked back en route to the win.
SU (1-10-1, 0-3-0) was out-shot 21-7 and took just one corner kick
to the Cardinals' five. Goalie Rachel
Norbuts (Woodstown, N.J./Woodstown) tallied 10
saves, five in each half, that helped keep Susquehanna in the
game.
The Cardinals got on the board after just over five minutes of
play when Kaylre Greaves netted a goal for the early 1-0 Cardinal
advantage. Susquehanna remained behind 1-0 for the next 22 minutes
before Wiley took a Laura Buriak (Salem,
Va./Salem) throw-in and knocked the ball from 20 yards out
past the Catholic goalie to tie the game at one.
Unfortunately Catholic responded a mere 23 seconds later with its
own goal to retake the lead at 2-1 with 17 minutes still to play in
the half. Caitlyn Cameron (Bristow, Va./Highland
School) came up with a defensive save at the 41:46 mark to
help keep it a 2-1 game at the midway point of the action.
SU was able to hold Catholic to only one goal in the final 45
minutes of play but unfortunately was also unable to find the back
of the net in the half.
