SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna field hockey returned home after a two-game road swing to host Wilkes on Tuesday night where the Crusaders defeated the Colonels 2-1.
The win snapped SU's five-game losing streak and marked its seventh victory of the fall while also improving the team's record to 4-3 at home. The victory is also SU's first over Wilkes since 2007.
The Crusaders (7-8) used two first-half goals and solid defense for the entire 70 minutes to defeat Wilkes (3-10). Susquehanna held a 17-14 edge in shots although Wilkes took 11 penalty corners to SU's six. Susquehanna goalie Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern) notched six saves, three of which came in the second half.
Katherine Millett (Auburn, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) led all players with six shots while Brodie Ercole (Oakmont, Pa./Lewisburg Area) had one goal and one assist for a three-point night. Emily Novakovich (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook) accounted for the team's second goal on one of her two shots in the game.
The Crusaders controlled the entire first half of the game, taking 12 shots to Wilkes' six. Ercole scored the game's opening goal, an unassisted score, just 11:21 into the game for the 1-0 SU lead. Almost exactly five minutes later Novakovich made it a 2-0 game when she tipped an Ercole pass into the cage.
Susquehanna finished the half with four shots over the final 2:30 minutes and even though none translated into goals, the Crusaders still held the 2-0 lead at halftime.
SU's defense limited Wilkes to eight shots in the second half although with eight minutes remaining, the Colonels turned one of those shots into a goal to make it a one-goal game.
Wilkes had a literal last-second chance to score the equalizer when Ashley Hahn's shot on a near-empty cage as time expired went just inches left of the cage to keep it a 2-1 Crusader victory.
Susquehanna remains at home on Saturday, Oct. 19 to host Landmark Conference opponent Scranton at 1 p.m. in the team's annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
