SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A 1-0 halftime lead seemed like it might hold up for the Susquehanna women's soccer team but a second-half goal from Penn College would eventually send the game to overtime where the teams played to a 1-1 tie.
The Crusaders (1-10-2) scored 14 minutes into regulation and held onto that 1-0 lead until the 64th minute when the Wildcats (8-5-2) tied the game at one. Neither team scored again in regulation, forcing overtime where 20 additional minutes passed without a goal to end the contest in a tie. This is the second-consecutive match against Penn College to end in a draw as the Crusaders and Wildcats battled to a 4-4 tie in 2012.
SU drastically out-shot Penn College by a 32-3 margin while holding the Wildcats to one shot on goal and without a single corner kick all afternoon.
Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood/Hiram) led all players with 11 shots, including Susquehanna's lone goal in the game. Hannah Jones (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area/Bucknell) added four shots and was one of seven players with at least two shots against the Wildcats.
Zuponcic put her team on the board with a goal in the 15th minute on a shot from 20 yards out the knocked off the crossbar and into the net.
That 1-0 Crusader lead lasted through almost the first 20 minutes of the second half before the Wildcats' Robyn Beddow scored an unassisted goal, knotting the game at one.
Erica Meader (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) took the final shot of regulation but it sailed high and the game headed to overtime. SU fired off a combined five shots in the two overtime periods while holding Penn College without a single shot but the Crusaders failed to find the back of the net as the match ended in a tie.
