SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Susquehanna field hockey squad took on the Royals of Scranton in a Landmark Conference showdown on Homecoming, grabbing a 2-1 victory to improve their conference record to 1-4 on Saturday afternoon. The contest was also designated as the Crusaders' Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
Scranton (12-2, 2-2 Landmark) took the early lead before Susquehanna (8-8, 0-4) put up two unanswered points.
The Royals' Cassie Mullen connected on a pass from Jessica Pankey to give Scranton the first points of the game. In the first half, Scranton outshot the Crusaders 10-1 and had eight penalty corners to Susquehanna's one as the contest remained 1-0 at halftime.
After a tough first half, Susquehanna capitalized on two of their four shots in the second half. The first goal came early as Lauren Cram (East Brunswick, N.J. / East Brunswick) found the back of the net in the 39th minute, off an assist by junior Brodie Ercole (Oakmont, Pa. / Lewisburg Area), tying the game at 1-1.
Freshman Emily Novakovich (Saratoga, Calif. / Lynbrook) secured the win in the 46th minute off a redirected pass from senior Nancy Heidt (Saunderstown, R.I. / North Kingstown), who also had two shot attempts in addition to her assist.
Goalie Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa. / Northern) had an impressive game, recording her eighth win of the season, saving fifteen shots and the team had two defensive saves. Freshman Tessa Woodring (Mifflinburg, Pa. / Mifflinburg Area) and sophomore Emily Reich (Livingston, N.J. / Livingston) each recorded a defensive save in the first half.
With her 20th career victory, Ruth moved into fifth place all-time, passing Katie Hess (1999-2000, 2002) as well as recording her 350th career save, moving into the top-five in that category.
The Crusaders are back in action hosting conference rival Goucher on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1p.m.
