WAYNE, N.J. – With 29 ticks on the clock, the Susquehanna
field hockey team had a chance to tie its game against William
Paterson and force overtime but it was not meant to be and the
Pioneers held on for the 2-1 win.
As time wound down in regulation, the Crusaders (6-5) were awarded
a penalty corner but the opportunity did not translate into a goal
as the Pioneers (6-5) came up with the one-goal victory.
William Paterson's Jacqui Giammetta scored the game's
first goal after 8:21 of play as she knocked in a rebound off a
corner from Annalis Mitcho. The Crusaders took the final two shots
of the half and had a penalty stroke with 1:19 remaining but all
three shots were saved to keep it 1-0 at halftime.
SU took its first shot of the second period seven minutes into the
action but was held without another shot until an Erica
Reichart (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg
Area) shot got past William Paterson goalie Kellye Statz
to make it a 1-1 game with just under 17 minutes to play. Reichart
would go on to finish with a game-high four shots, all of which
were on goal.
The Pioneers quickly responded, though, breaking the tie less
roughly a minute later to back up by one, 2-1, with 15 minutes left
to play. SU's last-chance penalty corner did not translate
into a goal, keeping it a 2-1 decision in favor of William
Paterson.
The Pioneers took just one more shot than the Crusaders (10-9) and
Susquehanna was able to put eight of its nine shots on goal.
Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern) played
all 70 minutes in goal and had four saves.
Susquehanna returns home on Saturday to host Landmark Conference
opponent Drew at 1 p.m.
