Field Hockey Narrowly Edged by William Paterson

Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – With 29 ticks on the clock, the Susquehanna field hockey team had a chance to tie its game against William Paterson and force overtime but it was not meant to be and the Pioneers held on for the 2-1 win.

As time wound down in regulation, the Crusaders (6-5) were awarded a penalty corner but the opportunity did not translate into a goal as the Pioneers (6-5) came up with the one-goal victory.

William Paterson's Jacqui Giammetta scored the game's first goal after 8:21 of play as she knocked in a rebound off a corner from Annalis Mitcho. The Crusaders took the final two shots of the half and had a penalty stroke with 1:19 remaining but all three shots were saved to keep it 1-0 at halftime.

SU took its first shot of the second period seven minutes into the action but was held without another shot until an Erica Reichart (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) shot got past William Paterson goalie Kellye Statz to make it a 1-1 game with just under 17 minutes to play. Reichart would go on to finish with a game-high four shots, all of which were on goal.

The Pioneers quickly responded, though, breaking the tie less roughly a minute later to back up by one, 2-1, with 15 minutes left to play. SU's last-chance penalty corner did not translate into a goal, keeping it a 2-1 decision in favor of William Paterson.

The Pioneers took just one more shot than the Crusaders (10-9) and Susquehanna was able to put eight of its nine shots on goal. Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern) played all 70 minutes in goal and had four saves.

Susquehanna returns home on Saturday to host Landmark Conference opponent Drew at 1 p.m.
