TOWSON, Md. – A trio of second half goals lifted Susquehanna men's soccer to a 3-0 Landmark Conference victory at Goucher Saturday afternoon and in the process clinched a berth into the league playoffs starting Nov. 7.
The Crusaders (11-4-1, 5-2 Landmark) battled the Gophers (6-7-3, 1-3-2 Landmark) in a scoreless first half as SU outshot Goucher 8-7. But the second half was a different story as the SU offense broke through and scored three goals to coast to the league win.
Senior back Patrick Fry (Denver, Colo. / Colorado Academy) scored his third goal of the season and ninth of his career off a free kick and drilled the shot into the upper left corner, with David Trank (Mendham, N.J. / West Morris Mendham) and Dean Hristopoulos (West Chester, Pa. / Unionville) providing the assists in the 56th minute.
Less than eight minutes later, sophomore Gannon Keller (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area) blasted a shot into the lower corner to extend the Crusader lead to 2-0, with Trank and Sam Tana (Baldwin, Md. / St. Paul's) adding the helpers.
The Crusaders all but iced the match in the 81st minute as Joe DeLuca (Freehold, N.J. / St. John Vianney) took a feed from classmate Kyle Semmel (Burlington Township, N.J. / Holy Cross) and scored off of the left post to give SU the commanding 3-0 advantage.
Trank led all players with four shots and senior Andrew Murphy (Natick, Mass. / Natick) added three shots of his own.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area) recorded four saves to earn the shutout, the fifth of the season and 17th of his career, tying him with Austin Kelsey for the most clean sheets in program history.
SU improves to 6-0-1 against Goucher in Landmark play, outscoring the Gophers 24-5 during this span.
The Crusaders host non-conference opponent Misericordia on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. The match was originally slated for Sept. 11 but was postponed due to strong thunderstorms.
