TOWSON, Md. – Playing its third double overtime match of the fall, Susquehanna women's soccer fell at Goucher 1-0 on a Gophers goal in the 108th minute Saturday afternoon.
During the second overtime session, Goucher (6-9-1, 2-3 Landmark) fired off three consecutive shots and senior goalkeeper Rachel Norbuts (Monroeville, N.J. / Woodstown) made several crucial saves to keep the Gophers off the board until the 108th minute.
In SU's counter attack, junior Erica Meader (Scarborough, Maine / Scarborough) rifled a shot that hit the crossbar in the 106th minute that nearly gave SU the dramatic win.
Another save by Norbuts in the 107th minute kept the Crusaders in the match but unfortunately less than a minute later, Goucher's Anja Opsahl drilled a shot from the left side into the net to hand SU the heartbreaking defeat
During the first overtime, Marissa DeParto (Franklin Lakes, N.J. / Indian Hills) fired a shot just high of the cage in the 94th minute and in the 98th minute Kate Wiley (Sellersville, Pa. / Pennridge) blasted another shot that was stopped by Goucher's keeper Juliana Harkavy.
In the first half of action, the Crusaders out-shot the Gophers 8-0,6 led by five shots by junior Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua, Ohio / Crestwood / Hiram). Goucher held the edge in corners during the opening period, 2-1.
Goucher held a 6-4 margin in shots in the second half of play and attempted four corners but neither team could find the back of the net as the match headed to overtime.
In the second half, Zuponcic fired off a pair of shots and Wiley and DeParto both notched a shot each. Norbuts played the entire match, registering six saves on the afternoon.
The Crusaders (1-13-2, 0-6 Landmark) wrap up the 2013 season by hosting non-conference opponent McDaniel on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.
