ABINGTON, Pa. – Susquehanna's volleyball team earned
victory number 26 on the year Saturday after three more wins in the
Penn State Abington Tournament.
The Crusaders (26-8, 4-1 Landmark) picked up three straight-set
victories over host PSU-Abington (25-16, 25-11, 25-21), Alvernia
(25-15, 25-8, 25-11) and Ursinus (25-10, 25-8, 25-18) to move
within one win of tying the program record for most wins in a
season (27) set back in 2008 (27-13).
Against the Lions, freshman Erin Byrne (San Diego,
Calif. / Scripps Ranch) tallied 12 kills (.429 attack
pct.) as the Crusaders used a .276 team attack percentage to defeat
the host team.
Classmate Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa. /
Hempfield) registered 29 assists and nine digs and
sophomore Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa. / Tamaqua
Area) recorded five service aces and eight digs in the
opening match.
Versus Alvernia, Byrne and junior Hayley Dunkel
(Pottsville, Pa. / Pottsville Area) each led the team with
eight kills each as SU yet again used a .368 team attack percentage
to beat the Crusaders.
O'Hearn tallied 29 assists, five digs and two block
assists and Dunkel chipped in with five block assists.
In the day's final match against Ursinus, Byrne led the
way with 10 kills (.450 attack pct.) while O'Hearn recorded
36 assists and four digs. Sophomore Rachel Wherry (New
Castle, Pa. / Neshannock) had five kills (.833 attack
pct.) and junior Jess Holm (Montvale, N.J. / Pascack
Hills) also recorded five kills (.714 attack pct.).
Paluck had 14 digs while classmates Corinne Eidle
(Reading, Pa. / Wyomissing Area) and Alyssa Chiodo
(Lansdale, Pa. / North Penn) combined for 13 digs.
The Crusaders hit the road again, heading to Penn State
Harrisburg on Saturday, Nov. 2 with matches against the Lions and
Mary Washington.
