SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Two players in double figures and 12
different players that contributed points all added up to an 85-67
Susquehanna men's basketball win over Penn State Wilkes Barre
in the second game of the 25th-annual Pepsi Tip-Off
Tournament.
With the win, SU secures a spot in Saturday's 3 p.m.
championship game against King's (Pa.) as the Monarchs
defeated Trinity 54-53 in Friday's opening game.
Saturday's championship appearance marks the
13th-straight year the Crusaders (2-0) have advanced to
the championship game of their annual tournament.
Senior center Harley Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa./Central
Mountain) led his team with 13 points while also adding
eight boards. Freshman Phil Madison (Johnstown, Pa./Great
Johnstown) added 12 points and three assists while
classmate Steven Weidlich (Watchung, N.J./Watchung
Hills) contributed eight points, nine rebounds and four
assists. Matt McGugan (Silver Spring, Md./Blake)
finished with nine points and five rebounds, three offensive, in 20
minutes of work off the bench.
As a team, Susquehanna held a 51-44 edge in rebounds and shot 38.8
percent from the floor. The Mountain Lions, meanwhile, also shot 38
percent and saw three players reach double figures but shot only 25
percent from three-point range and 50 percent at the free throw
line.
Penn State went up 1-0 70 seconds into the game before a
Jake Eskin (Germantown, Md./Churchill) free throw
at 18:08 tied it at one. Brandon Hedley (Silver Spring,
Md./Salisbury Prep) sank a three roughly one minute later
for a 4-1 Crusader lead and the team never looked back. Hedley
would go on to finish with eight points, three rebounds and three
assists.
Susquehanna took its first double-digit lead, 16-6, on a Sellinger
layup with 10:22 to play. The Crusaders saw their lead trimmed to
five (29-24) with 5:58 left in the half but scored 17 of the final
27 points to go into halftime leading 46-34.
SU's defense limited the Mountain Lions to just 33
second-half points and led by a game-high 21 points (71-50) after
two Sellinger free throws with just over seven minutes remaining in
the game.
Penn State was unable to pull any closer than 15 points over the
remainder of the game to ultimately fall 85-67.

- The Crusaders have combined to score 184 points over
their first two games of the season (99-84 win at Lycoming on Nov.
19).
