KING'S, Pa. – With Sunday afternoon's 66-53 win
over Wilkes, the Susquehanna men's basketball team won the
Monarch Classic while also picking up its second-straight
victory.
The Crusaders (5-3) were the lone team to go 2-0 at the Classic,
hosted by King's College. As a result, senior Harley
Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) was named
Tournament MVP while sophomore guard Brandon Hedley (Silver
Spring, Md./Salisbury Prep) was named to the
All-Tournament Team.
Sellinger put up nine points and 16 boards in Sunday's
13-point victory over the Colonels (5-4) while also adding two
blocks and two steals in 30 minutes of work. Hedley, meanwhile,
added 22 points for SU. Jake Eskin
(Germantown, Md./Churchill) chipped in 13 and
three assists while Steven Weidlich (Watchung,
N.J./Watchung Hills) had 11 points and three assists.
Susquehanna scored 20 of its 66 points off 14 Wilkes turnovers and
shot better than 41 percent from the floor.
The game opened on a 6-0 Crusader run and SU remained ahead by
six, 14-8, after an Eskin layup at the 8:22 mark. Wilkes countered,
however, with seven unanswered points to go up 15-14 with 6:39 left
in the opening half.
That would be the one and only lead the Colonels would hold,
though. A Weidlich trey three minutes later put Susquehanna back in
the lead by two (17-15) and the team would go into halftime leading
26-21 after a Hedley jumper at the buzzer.
Two possessions into the second half, Susquehanna led by double
digits (31-21) for the first time all afternoon and thanks to an
11-0 run to open the half, SU went up by 21 (42-21) six minutes
into the period.
The Crusaders led by 10-plus points for the next seven-plus
minutes until Wilkes closed the gap to 53-45 at the 6:34 mark. But,
with 1:38 to play, an Eskin free throw again made it a 10-point
game and Susquehanna would go on to win by 13 (66-53).
SU will now travel to Puerto Rico to face 2012-13 Elite 8 team St.
