BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's basketball
team could not pull off a win against Moravian in the team's
final road game of the season as the Crusaders dropped a 68-51
decision on Saturday afternoon.
SU (7-16, 2-10) held two early, one-point leads but after the 16:18
mark of the game, failed to hold another lead.
Mariah Monahan (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) and
Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa./Wallenpaupack)
combined for 32 of the team's 51 points with 18 and 14
points, respectively. Palazzi finished with a double-double as she
pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Crusaders failed to sink a single three-pointer all afternoon
and committed 31 turnovers which translated into 30 Moravian points
as the Greyhounds (20-3, 11-1) grabbed their 20th win of
the season.
Monahan's jumper less than three minutes into the game put SU
ahead for the first time in the game at 17:19 and her fastbreak
layup 60 seconds later kept it a one-point Crusader lead (8-7).
That marked Susquehanna's final lead of the game, however.
Moravian went ahead on its next possession to lead 9-8 which was
the start of a 14-0 run that put SU in a 21-8 hole with 9:05 left
in the half.
Ahead 27-17 with 3:51 left, the Greyhounds scored the half's
final four points to take a 31-17 lead into the locker room at
halftime.
At the 16:21 mark of the second half, Moravian held a 20-point
advantage over the Crusaders (39-19) after scoring eight of the
first 10 points of the period. That lead ballooned to 25, 49-24,
just nine minutes into the half and was a game-high 26-point lead
(57-31) with less than seven minutes to play in the game.
A brief, 9-0 Susquehanna run trimmed that lead to 13, 64-51, but
with just 50 seconds left to play, time ran out to complete any
attempt at a comeback.
The Crusaders return home to host Juniata on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
That game will mark the Play4Kay breast cancer awareness night.
