LANCASTER, Pa. – A modest, three-game win streak came to an
end for the Susquehanna men's lacrosse team on Wednesday as
the Crusaders fell 10-4 at Franklin & Marshall.
SU (4-3) netted one goal in each quarter but the Diplomats (3-2)
used a six-goal second half to put the game out of reach.
Four different players accounted for those four Crusader goals and
two different players picked up assists. Goalie Will
Torrence (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) played all but
the final 5:05 of the game and finished with seven saves.
F&M had only nine more shots than Susquehanna (38-29) but won
10-of-17 face-offs. The Susquehanna defense did keep the Diplomats
from converting on any of their extra-man opportunities,
though.
The Diplomats got out to a 2-0 start before Phil Lapone
(Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) scored SU's first
goal of the game with 3:05 left in the first quarter to make it a
2-1 game.
Seven minutes into the second quarter, Tylere Fritts
(Chatham, N.J./Chatham) netted the equalizer on an
unassisted goal to make it 2-2. F&M scored the final two goals
of the quarter, including one with 31 seconds remaining, but still
led by just two (4-2) at halftime.
Unfortunately the Crusaders scored only two goals over the
remaining 30 minutes of action while F&M scored six, including
the first four of the third quarter. SU did not get back on the
board until 1:15 remained in the quarter when J.B. Montanye
(Reisterstown, Md./Loyola) broke the Diplomats'
scoring streak with a goal that made it 8-3.
F&M was able to score the first two goals of the fourth and
final quarter to lead 10-3 before Austen Lein (New
Vernon,N.J./Madison) netted the final goal of the game at
the 5:05 mark for the final 10-4 score.
The Crusaders remain on the road to open Landmark Conference play
on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Drew.
