SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Women's lacrosse is indeed a spring sport,
although the scene at Susquehanna's Sassafras Field on
Saturday afternoon told a different picture. Despite the steady
snow showers, the No. 17 Crusaders took down Alvernia 14-3. The win
is SU's seventh-straight victory to open the 2013 season.
Emma Ehler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) again netted
five goals – bringing her season total to 33 – while
Annie McElaney (Natick, Mass./Natick) and
Michelle McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph)
chipped in three apiece. McGinniss also added a game-high two
assists.
Goalie Emily Stankaitis (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye
Falls-Lima) played 52-plus minutes of the game and racked
up five saves and surrendered only two goals.
SU held a dominant edge over Alvernia (1-3-1) in nearly every
statistical category, including shots (41-17), ground balls (43-17)
and free-position shots (6-of-14).
The teams traded goals to open the game before Susquehanna went on
an 8-0 run to end the half. Three of those goals came from McElaney
while McGinniss and Ehler scored two apiece. Ehler accounted for
the final goal of the half which came at the 2:01 mark and made it
9-1.
The second half saw only a combined seven goals but the Crusaders
scored five of those goals to essentially keep Alvernia out of the
game. SU went up by 10 (12-2) on a Hileri Keizer
(Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley) goal at the 11:50 mark
and stayed up by at least 10 for the remainder of the game.
