Box Score 2 UNION, N.J. -- The Susquehanna softball team collected their 11th and 12th wins of 2013 after sweeping Kean Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders won the first game 4-3 in eight innings and won the second contest 5-3.
In the first contest, the Crusaders (12-2) collected seven hits and rallied in the top of seventh from a three-run deficit to tie the game. SU scored in the eighth and held on for for the come-from-behind victory, winning 4-3.
To begin the seventh inning rally, Bridget Rafter (Highlands, N.J. / Henry Hudson Regional) reached on an error by the shortstop and was pinch ran for by Cierra Omlor (Salem, N.J. / Salem). Amanda Neveroski (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North) ripped a double to left followed by Brianna Murphy (Hazlet, N.J. / Mater Dei Prep), who reached on a error by the second basemen, scoring both Omlor and Neveroski to bring the game to 3-2.
Lauren Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) knotted the game at 3-3 with an RBI single up the middle, bringing home Murphy.
The Cougars (6-6) loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with two outs but lined out to Lauren Gilbert to send the game to extra innings.
In the eighth inning, Madison Clark (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs) executed a sac bunt, moving Alyssa Cantalini (Kitchener, Ontario / St. David Catholic Secondary) to third, who later scored off a Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa. / Central Bucks East) sac fly to give SU the lead 4-3.
Kathryn Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) went 2-for-3 with a double in the third and picked up a stolen base. Lauren Gilbert went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Rafter ripped a double to right center in the second and Neveroski cracked a two-bagger to center field in the fifth to pace SU.
Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock North) got the game one win for her fourth victory of the year. Lewis went all eight innings, scattering 10 hits while striking out four and walking only one.
In game two, SU went ahead early on in the first and added three more runs in the second. Murphy and Cantalini both had singles and Murphy later scored as Kathryn Gilbert hit a sac fly to center to give the Crusaders a 1-0 edge.
Neveroski started off the second with a base knock to right followed bunt single by Murphy. Cantalini loaded the bases on a fielder's choice and Kathryn Gilbert drove in two runs with a single to give SU a 3-0 advantage. Devlin picked up an RBI with a base hit through the middle to increase SU's lead 4-0.
Kean cut the lead in half with a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom half of the fourth to make the game 4-2. The Crusaders responded with another run in the fifth as Kathryn Gilbert doubled down the right field line and Clark brought her home to make the score 5-2.
Kean hit another homer in the fifth to trim the SU lead to 5-3 but the Crusaders didn't allow another run and completed the sweep.
Ashley Cole (Carle Place, N.Y. / Carle Place) pitched a complete game to remain undefeated on the year at 5-0. The freshman gave up seven hits and the three earned runs in her outing.
The Crusaders remain at Kean to play No. 1 Montclair State tomorrow starting at 12 p.m. at Cougar Field in Union, N.J.
