SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Sophomore pitchers Spencer
Hotaling (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area) and
Casey Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) both
threw complete game shutouts as Susquehanna baseball defeated
Moravian twice on Saturday in the Crusaders' Landmark
Conference home opener.
Hotaling earned his third win of the year in game one (W, 2-0).
The righty threw a two-hitter, striking out four, issuing only one
walk and forcing 14 ground outs.
The Crusaders (10-11, 4-1) scored the game's first run in
the fourth. Bryan Palsi (Brielle, N.J. /
Manasquan) led off with a single up the middle and was
moved to second after a sac bunt by Nick Ferlise (Toms
River, N.J. / Toms River North). Kyle Semmel
(Burlington Twp., N.J. / Holy Cross) cracked an RBI single
to score Palsi and give SU a 1-0 lead.
SU tacked on another run in the fifth as Jared Musilli
(Branchville, N.J. / High Point Regional) and Ty
Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa. / Upper Dauphin) led off
the inning with back-to-back singles. Dan Wing (West
Chester, Pa. / Unionville) drove in a run with a sacrifice
fly later in the frame to push the Crusader lead to 2-0.
Hotaling gave up a double to the Greyhounds (10-9, 4-4) in the
seventh, but settled down with two ground outs to end the
contest.
In the night cap, Hood scattered only four hits and struck out a
pair to earn his third win of the season as the Crusaders
offense opened up to win 6-0.
SU scored twice in the bottom of the third. Wing drove in
another run with a single to left and Palsi registered an RBI on a
groundout to give the Crusaders a 2-0 edge.
In the fourth, Semmel led off with a walk and stole second base.
Dylan Glassmire (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks
South) drove Semmel in with an RBI single to right center.
Glassmire later scored on a throwing error by Moravian and
Nick Kennedy (Brookeville, Md. / Good Council)
picked up an RBI single to right, increasing the SU lead to
5-0.
SU and Moravian play tomorrow at 12 p.m. to complete the weekend
series.
