SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's lacrosse team
thought it would be escaping to warmer weather down south to face
Shenandoah on Thursday night, but a snowstorm in Virginia moved the
game to SU's home field where the Crusaders won 16-5.
Thursday evening's win improved SU's record to 3-2 on
the season and the team has now won back-to-back games.
Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison) led the
way with a five-goal, four-assist outing, followed by two goals
from Connor Moran (Delafield, Wisc./Kettle
Moraine) and Phil Lapone (Essex Fells, N.J./West
Essex). Tylere Fritts (Chatham,
N.J./Chatham) added four assists and one goal.
Goalie Will Torrence (Wallingford, Pa./Strath
Haven) played all but the final 10 minutes of the game and
surrendered only four goals while making seven saves.
As a team, SU out-shot the Hornets (3-1) by a 40-24 mark and also
capitalized on both extra-man opportunities.
A seven-goal second quarter quickly turned the tide in SU's
favor as the team led 9-1 with 5:27 still to play in the second
quarter. Lein accounted for four of those seven goals including
three-straight scores the last of which made it 6-1.
Shenandoah was able to score the final two goals of the half,
though, and trimmed what had been an eight-goal lead to six
(9-3).
The Crusader defense limited the Hornets to only three second-half
goals while SU netted six of its own. Susquehanna scored all but
one of the five third-quarter goals with four different Crusaders
netting scores in the quarter, including Lein's fifth of the
evening.
Shenandoah was able to score back-to-back goals in the final
quarter but Tyler Murkley (Rose Valley,
Pa./Radnor) capped off the game's scoring with a
goal with 33 seconds remaining to make it a final score of 15-6 in
favor of SU.
