LYNCHBURG, Pa. – The third win in a row for the Susquehanna
men's lacrosse team came in the form of an 18-10 victory at
Randolph on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va. Freshman
Connor Moran (Delafield, Wisc./Kettle Moraine) led
all scorers with his five-goal, two-assist outing.
Ten different players found the back of the net for SU (4-2)
including Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison)
who had two goals and a game-high four assists and Ryan
Natusch (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) had a pair of goals
and three assists.
Freshman goalie Ted Benoit (Newtown,
Conn./Newtown) got the start for the Crusaders and played
the first 30 minutes, making one save and giving up four goals.
Jared Knowlton (North Salem, N.J./Kent School)
played all but the final five minutes of the second half and racked
up four saves.
Susquehanna committed only 22 turnovers, out-shot the Wildcats by a
54-30 margin and capitalized on 4-of-8 man-up opportunities.
Randolph opened the game with two goals in the first six minutes
before SU responded with two goals of its own from Lein and
Phil Lapone (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex). Those
two scores marked the final scoring of the first quarter for a 2-2
game after 15 minutes of play.
In the second quarter, the Crusaders out-scored the Wildcats 6-2
thanks in part to three Moran goals. Randolph tied it at three
before Lein broke the tie with an unassisted score and
Moran's third goal of the quarter came with 1:04 remaining to
make it an 8-4 game at halftime.
Susquehanna came out of halftime and promptly rattled off
five-straight goals to up its lead to nine (13-4). Randolph scored
two of the final three goals of the quarter but still trailed 14-5
with just 15 minutes left to play.
The Wildcats made it a game by scoring five goals over those
remaining 15 minutes to get within just six goals (16-10) with 5:30
still to play. SU was able to keep Randolph off the scoreboard for
the remainder of the game, though, while tacking on two insurance
goals for the final 18-10 victory.
The Crusaders remain on the road to face Franklin & Marshal on
March 13 at 3 p.m.
