Baseball Salvages Split with Drew

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – After dropping the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader against Drew, Susquehanna baseball hung on in game two to salvage a split with the Rangers.

The Crusaders (12-17, 6-5) dropped game one by the score of 3-2 and won the second contest, 3-2.

In game two, the game was scoreless until SU broke through in the bottom half of the fourth. Dan Wing (West Chester, Pa. / Unionville) reached on an error by Drew's shortstop and later scored off an RBI center field single by Bryan Palsi (Brielle, N.J. / Manasquan). Palsi eventually touched home on a passed ball to give SU a 2-0 edge. The Crusaders increased their lead to 3-0 in the fifth by scoring on a throwing error by Drew's third baseman.

Drew (10-17, 3-8) tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth to make it a one-run game (3-2). But closer Matt Smith (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. / Wyoming Seminary) had a one-two-three seventh inning to earn his sixth save of the season.

Casey Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) earned the win on the mound as the sophomore southpaw hurled six innings, scattering five hits, allowing one earned run, and fanning seven.

Spencer Hotaling (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area) suffered the defeat in the earlier game despite going all seven innings without allowing an earned run. The sophomore righty scattered five hits, issued one walk and struck out six.

SU had four hits in the first game, with two coming off the bat of Kyle Semmel (Burlington Twp., N.J. / Holy Cross). Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa. / Upper Dauphin) and Jared Musilli (Branchville, N.J. / High Point Regional) accounted for the other base knocks for the Crusaders.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first two innings of play. In the bottom of the first, Raubenstine scored on a double play and in the second, Rob Marcickiewicz (Red Bank, N.J. / Middletown South) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Semmel.

The Rangers plated all of their runs in the top of the fifth on two hits and two errors by the Crusaders to jump ahead 3-2. SU stranded a pair of runners in the sixth and in the last half of the seventh, were unable to score despite having the bases loaded with only one out.

SU and Drew will complete their weekend series with a nine-inning game tomorrow at 12 p.m.
