SELINSGROVE, Pa. – After dropping the opening game of
Saturday's doubleheader against Drew, Susquehanna baseball
hung on in game two to salvage a split with the Rangers.
The Crusaders (12-17, 6-5) dropped game one by the score of 3-2
and won the second contest, 3-2.
In game two, the game was scoreless until SU broke through in
the bottom half of the fourth. Dan Wing (West Chester, Pa.
/ Unionville) reached on an error by Drew's
shortstop and later scored off an RBI center field single by
Bryan Palsi (Brielle, N.J. / Manasquan). Palsi
eventually touched home on a passed ball to give SU a 2-0 edge. The
Crusaders increased their lead to 3-0 in the fifth by scoring on a
throwing error by Drew's third baseman.
Drew (10-17, 3-8) tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth to make
it a one-run game (3-2). But closer Matt Smith (Blue Ridge
Summit, Pa. / Wyoming Seminary) had a one-two-three
seventh inning to earn his sixth save of the season.
Casey Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock)
earned the win on the mound as the sophomore southpaw hurled six
innings, scattering five hits, allowing one earned run, and fanning
seven.
Spencer Hotaling (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove
Area) suffered the defeat in the earlier game despite
going all seven innings without allowing an earned run. The
sophomore righty scattered five hits, issued one walk and struck
out six.
SU had four hits in the first game, with two coming off the bat
of Kyle Semmel (Burlington Twp., N.J. / Holy
Cross). Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa. /
Upper Dauphin) and Jared Musilli (Branchville,
N.J. / High Point Regional) accounted for the other base
knocks for the Crusaders.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first two
innings of play. In the bottom of the first, Raubenstine scored on
a double play and in the second, Rob Marcickiewicz (Red
Bank, N.J. / Middletown South) hit a sacrifice fly to left
field to score Semmel.
The Rangers plated all of their runs in the top of the fifth on
two hits and two errors by the Crusaders to jump ahead 3-2. SU
stranded a pair of runners in the sixth and in the last half of the
seventh, were unable to score despite having the bases loaded with
only one out.
SU and Drew will complete their weekend series with a
nine-inning game tomorrow at 12 p.m.
