WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Susquehanna baseball team could only
come up with two runs against Catholic in the three-game series
finale on Sunday and those two runs were not enough as the
Crusaders fell 14-2.
Dan Wing (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) went
4-for-4 for SU (12-23, 6-9) to account for nearly half of the
team's hits. Dylan Glassmire (Doylestown, Pa./Central
Bucks South) was 2-for-5 with one RBI and leadoff hitter
Josh Cimino (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) picked
up one hit and scored a run.
Susquehanna used five pitchers over the course of the nine-inning
game. Starter Brian Wendig (West Chester, Pa./Malvern
Prep) lasted three innings and gave up six runs on six
hits and walked five batters. Nick Torkildsen (Milford,
Pa./Delaware Valley) and Matt Smith (Blue Ridge
Summit, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) pitched the eighth and ninth
innings, respectively, and combined to give up one run with five
strikeouts between them.
Catholic (24-12, 11-4) did not waste much time in jumping out to a
lead, scoring five runs in the first inning on five hits.
The Crusaders were able to get a run back in the second on a
Jared Musilli (Branchville, N.J./High Point
Regional) RBI groundout that made it 5-1.
Unfortunately Catholic added a run in the third to go up 6-1 and
then plated three run in the bottom of the fourth to lead 9-1.
The Crusaders scored their second – and ultimately final run
– of the game on Glassmire's RBI single to right
field in the top of the fifth that scored Cimino who had reached
base on a walk.
That marked the final run of the game for SU, however, and the
Cardinals added another run in the bottom of the seventh to take a
14-2 lead, which remained the final score as Susquehanna stranded
two base runners in the top of the ninth.
The Crusaders return home on April 23 to host Messiah at 4
p.m.
