MADISON, N.J. – A 24-hour delay turned out to be no big deal for the Susquehanna softball team as the Crusaders swept a doubleheader at Drew in a series that was pushed back one day due to field conditions.
SU (26-6, 6-2) won game one 7-2 and then took game two by a 10-0 score over the Rangers (11-21, 2-8).
In game one, the Crusaders out-hit Drew by a 12-3 margin. Alyssa Cantalini (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic Secondary) went 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBI while Brianna Murphy (Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei Prep) was 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Starting pitcher Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) went the distance, scattering three hits and seven strikeouts over her seven innings of work.
After a scoreless first inning, SU scored the game's first run in the top of the second after Brittney Devlin (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East) scored from third on a fielding error.
Susquehanna proceeded to add two more runs the very next inning, the first of which scored on a Cantalini double to left field. Amanda Neveroski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) plated the other run with a single up the middle that scored Cantalini.
The scoring continued the next inning as SU added three runs to go up 6-0. Murphy came up with the first RBI hit of the inning that scored Larissa Luu (Montandon, Pa./Milton). Cantalini then came up with another double that sent home two more runners for the 6-0 Crusader lead.
Drew scored its first – and only – two runs of the game in the bottom half of that inning but Lewis did not surrender another run and SU tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a Sarah Bush (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro North) RBI double.
Lewis retired the side in order in the seventh to end the game.
The nightcap ended in six innings due to the mercy rule after SU added three runs in the sixth to go up 10-0. The Crusaders racked up 13 hits, with three from Madison Clark (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs), and Ashley Cole (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) tossed a six-inning, one-hit shutout. She also struck out nine batters and did not issue a walk.
Susquehanna jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second and never looked back. Murphy drove in two with a double to right center that accounted for the third and fourth runs of the inning.
Neveroski led off the third with a triple and eventually scored on a Bush single to right field for the 5-0 Crusader lead.
SU added solo runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning where the Crusaders added three runs on four hits. Neveroski came up with a RBI double to center to drive in the inning's first run and Clark followed with a two-RBI double down the left field line that made it 10-0.
Cole worked around a leadoff single in the sixth and retired the next three batters in order to end the game.
The Crusaders have a quick turnaround as they host Gettysburg on Monday in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
