SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Fans who sat through all 10 innings of
Susquehanna's softball win over Lebanon Valley certainly got
their fill of excitement in a back-and-forth game that ended in a
7-6 Crusader victory.
Sarah Bush (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro
North) came up with the ultimate game-winning hit for SU
(29-6) in the bottom of the 10th. Game two was called
due to rain with two outs in the bottom of the third and
Susquehanna leading 2-0.
Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North)
pitched the first eight innings and gave up five runs – one
earned – on 11 hits and struck out eight batters.
Ashley Cole (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) tossed
the final two innings and got credit for the win.
SU out-hit Lebanon Valley (27-5-1) by an 11-7 margin.
Alyssa Cantalini (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic
Secondary) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while
Brianna Murphy (Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei Prep) was
2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Neither team plated a run for the first four innings before each
squad added runs in their respective halves of the fifth inning.
The Crusaders scored their run on a Murphy RBI single to left field
that scored Kathryn Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley) who had reached base with a two-out triple.
It remained 1-1 after the seventh, forcing extra innings. In the
eighth inning the Dutchmen promptly put up a four-spot thanks to
two hits and one SU error to take a 5-1 lead.
The Crusaders did not let that deter them, however, and countered
with a four-run inning of their own. Brittany Devlin
(Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East) came up with the
game-tying hit, a single down the right field line that scored
Amanda Neveroski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) and Cantalini for a 5-5 game.
In the top of the 10th, Lebanon Valley plated the
go-ahead run but Susquehanna rallied for the second time in the
game. Murphy scored the tying run on a Madison Clark (Blue
Spring, Mo./Blue Springs) RBI single to left field and
Bush came through with a single to left center that scored
Cantalini, who had reached base after being hit by a pitch to lead
off the inning.
The Crusaders wrap-up conference play this weekend with a
doubleheader at Scranton on Saturday with a doubleheader starting
at 1 p.m.
