SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna baseball split with Juniata
in Saturday's doubleheader at Bollinger Field. Prior to the
contests, nine members of the team were recognized for Senior
Day.
SU (14-24, 7-10) dropped game one, 5-3, before winning the
second contest 3-2 in eight innings. In game two, Gregg
Uhlak (Ocean Gate, N.J. / Central Regional) executed a
successful squeeze bunt to score Mike Rucereto (Washington
Twp., N.J. / Bergen Catholic) to win in walk-off fashion
and salvage a split with the Eagles (10-25, 5-12).
Rucereto started the inning with an infield single and advanced
to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Semmel (Burlington
Twp., N.J. / Holy Cross). Rucereto later made his way to
third on a wild pitch and touched home on Uhlak's squeeze
bunt single to take game two.
Uhlak finished the game going 2-for-4 and senior Ken
Kayama (Koto-Ku, Japan / Solebury (Pa.)) also added a pair
of base knocks.
Nick Kennedy (Brookeville, Md. / Good Council)
and senior Dan Wing (West Chester, Pa. /
Unionville) both had an RBI and freshman Ryan
Place (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) added
a double in fourth.
Matt Smith (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. / Wyoming
Seminary) was the winning pitcher, going two innings in
relief. Casey Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa. /
Susquehannock) got the starting nod, going 5.1 innings,
scattering six hits and allowing one run.
In the opener, Juniata jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth
before the Crusaders knotted the game in the bottom of the frame.
Dylan Glassmire (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks
South) drew a leadoff walk and Bryan Palsi
(Brielle, N.J. / Manasquan) followed with a single. Wing
cracked an RBI single through the left side and later scored on a
balk by the Eagles' pitcher to tie contest.
The Eagles plated two runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. SU
scored one run in the bottom of the inning to make it a one-run
game. Nick Ferlise (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River
North) singled to right and Wing followed with a double
down the left field line. Rob Marcickiewicz (Red Bank, N.J.
/ Middletown South) drew a walk and Jared Musilli
(Branchville, N.J. / High Point Regional) also reached on
a walk with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Juniata plated an insurance run in the seventh and unfortunately
for SU, the Eagles relievers sealed the game one win by recording
three fly outs to end the threat.
Spencer Hotaling (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove
Area) was tagged with the loss as the sophomore went all
seven innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs.
The Crusaders and Juniata close out their weekend series
