Crusaders Fall in 2013 Finale

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna baseball fell to Juniata 11-5 in the final game of the 2013 season at Bollinger Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Crusaders (14-25, 7-11) fell behind 2-0 after the Eagles (11-25, 6-12) plated a pair of runs in the second.

SU cut the deficit in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the third. Jared Musilli (Branchville, N.J. / High Point Regional) drew a walk and later scored on an RBI single by Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa. / Upper Dauphin Area).

Juniata scored another run in the top of the fourth before batting around in the fifth, scoring seven runs on seven hits to take a commanding 10-1 lead. The Eagles added another score in the sixth to go ahead by 10 runs, 11-1.

But the Crusaders responded, plating three runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the seventh to make the contest 11-4. Senior Ken Kayama [Koto-Ku, Japan / Solebury (Pa.)] cracked a single through the left side and Greg Stellon (Chadds Ford, Pa. / Tatnall School) followed with a base knock to right center. Musilli blasted a two-run single to right field and Nick Kennedy (Brookeville, Md. / Good Council) later hit an RBI single to complete the seventh inning scoring.

SU scored another run in the bottom of the ninth as Stellon scored on a fielding error by the Eagles' third basemen, but the Juniata reliever ended the game with a fly out to center field.

The Crusaders finished with nine hits, compared to 19 for Juniata. Gregg Uhlak (Ocean Gate, N.J. / Central Regional) and Stellon both led the team with two hits apiece.

Senior Brian Wendig (West Chester, Pa. / Malvern Prep) got the starting nod and went 4.2 innings with two strikeouts. Every reliever who followed was a senior as Matt Roe (Freehold, N.J. / St. John Vianney), Pat Jennings (Essex Falls, N.J. / West Essex), Nick Torkildsen (Milford, Pa. / Delaware Valley) and Tyler Della Badia (Scotch Plains, N.J. / Scotch Plains-Fanwood) all appeared out of the bullpen.

Senior Nick Ferlise (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North) ends his career with 16 homers (T-third most all-time), 102 RBI (second all-time), 32 doubles (third all-time) and 142 hits (ninth all-time).

Classmate Dan Wing (West Chester, Pa. / Unionville) finishes with 104 career hits, including 24 doubles, four homers and 47 RBI. Kayama ends with 90 hits, including 20 doubles, five triples, five homers and 50 RBI.
