DALLAS, Pa. – The Susquehanna softball team swept a Tuesday
afternoon doubleheader from Misericordia to win its 11th
and 12th-straight games of the spring.
SU (33-6) won game one 6-0, its ninth shutout of the year, before
winning game two by a 7-3 score.
In the opening game, Sarah Hoffman
(Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) tossed the
complete-game shutout, scattering only five hits over her seven
innings of work.
Larissa Luu (Montandon, Pa./Milton) was 2-for-3
with two runs scored and Amanda Neveroski (Toms River,
N.J./Toms River North) led the team with two RBI.
After scoreless first two innings, the Crusaders put three runs on
the board in the third inning on four hits and one Misericordia
area. Susquehanna opened the inning with four-straight hits,
including a two-RBI single from Neveroski. A fielding error allowed
the inning's third run to score for the 3-0 SU lead.
The very next inning Susquehanna plated another three runs.
Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East)
was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the first run
and Lauren Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley) worked a bases-loaded walk to make it a 5-0 lead.
Another fielding error allowed the inning's third run to
score to give SU the 6-0 lead after five innings.
Hoffman stranded two Cougars runners in the sixth and another in
the seventh to pick up her 11th win of the spring.
Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North)
started game two and gave up just one unearned run on three hits in
her four full innings of work. Ashley Cole (Carle Place,
N.Y./Carle Place) pitched the final three innings and
surrendered two runs on three hits.
At the plate, Alyssa Cantalini (Kitchener, Ontario/St.
David Catholic Secondary) 2-for-4 with two runs scored
while Stephanie Chlebove (Northampton, Pa./Northampton
Area) was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
SU broke a scoreless tie in the fourth after Cantalini led off the
inning with a double and scored on a fielder's choice ball.
Anna Heggenstaller (Liverpool, Pa./Greenwood)
scored the inning's second run on another fielder's
choice and Luu hit into a third fielder's choice to drive
home Taylor Brady (Phillipsburg, N.J./Bethlehem
Catholic) for a 3-0 Susquehanna lead.
Misericordia got back one of those runs in the bottom of the third
but Susquehanna tacked on another four runs the very next inning
with Chlebove driving in two of the four runs with a double to left
center.
Cole came in to pitch in the bottom of the fifth and gave up two
runs as the Cougars trimmed SU's lead to four (7-3). Cole
pitched a scoreless final two innings, however, to preserve the
Susquehanna victory.
The Crusaders now turn their attention to the Landmark Conference
Tournament which they host on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. SU
first faces Juniata on Friday at 11 a.m.
