BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Susquehanna softball team split its
doubleheader against Landmark Conference opponent Moravian on
Sunday afternoon, winning game one 11-7 before falling 3-0 in the
nightcap.
Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North)
went the distance for SU in game one and picked up her eighth win
of the season despite a few shaky innings. She gave up seven runs
(four earned) on 14 hits but walked only one batter all
afternoon.
At the plate, Lauren Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Kathryn
Gilbert (Mechanicsville, Pa./Cumberland Valley) collected
two hits, two RBI and scored two runs.
Moravian took an early, 1-0 lead after one inning of play before SU
broke through for a four-run second inning. Amanda
Neveroski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) led off the
inning with a solo shot to tie the game at one and the remaining
three runs all scored on Larissa Luu's (Montandon,
Pa./Milton) two-out, three-run homer to left field that
quickly made it a 4-1 game in favor of the Crusaders.
The Greyhounds countered, however, with three runs of their own in
the bottom half of that inning for a 4-4 game.
SU was able to add another run the very next inning on a
Brittney Devlin (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East)
RBI single that broke the tie and made it a 5-4 ballgame but
Moravian plated two of its own to regain a 6-5 lead.
The scoring continued with Susquehanna adding another four runs in
its half of the fourth inning courtesy of five hits and one
Moravian error. Lauren Gilbert drove home half of those runs with a
two-RBI single to left field and the Crusaders came out of the
inning leading 9-6.
The Crusaders tacked on two runs in the fifth inning on a Kathryn
Gilbert two-run homer to right center field that made it 11-6.
While Moravian scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth,
Lewis was able to shut them out for the remainder of the game and
preserve the SU win.
Susquehanna collected only four hits in the second game with
Brianna Murphy (Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei Prep)
accounting for half of those hits. Starting pitcher Ashley
Cole (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) went all six innings
and gave up only three runs but suffered just her second loss of
the season.
Moravian took the lead on a Jenn Dalickas leadoff homer in the
second inning and it remained a 1-0 game through four and a half
innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Greyhounds tacked on what
ended up as two insurance runs with four hits in the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Bridget Rafter (Highlands,
N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) reached with a one-out single
up the middle but SU could not bring her home as Moravian held on
for the 3-0 margin of victory.
The Crusaders return home on Tuesday, April 9 to host Lycoming in
the teams' annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game with a
doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
