SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The fourth-annual Cancer Awareness Cup
between the Susquehanna and Lycoming softball teams went the way of
the Crusaders as they won the Cup game 9-0 before going on to win
the nightcap of the doubleheader 3-0.
In game one, SU (19-5) used a five-run fifth inning to end the game
early in the first shutout of the afternoon. Starter Ashley
Cole (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) tossed all five
innings and scattered three hits over her five shutout innings. She
struck out eight Lycoming (10-12) batters and did not issue a
walk.
Kathryn Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley) went 3-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored while
Madison Clark (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) had
two hits with two runs scored, as did Bridget Rafter
(Highlands, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional).
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when SU plated
two runs via two hits and a Lycoming error. Both runs scored on a
Brittany Murphy (Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei Prep)
single and a Lycoming throwing error.
The Crusaders added two more runs in the fourth, aided by two more
Warriors errors.
Lycoming was still in the game before Susquehanna broke out for
five runs in the fifth on seven hits. Anna Heggenstaller
(Liverpool, Pa./Greenwood), Larissa Luu
(Montandon, Pa./Milton) and Gilbert all came up with RBI
hits, with Gilbert's driving in two to end the game.
Game two was more of a pitchers' duel with Sarah
Hoffman (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) going the
distance and allowing zero runs on six hits with two walks and two
strikeouts. Amanda Neveroski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) accounted for half of SU's hits in the game
as she went 3-for-3 with one RBI.
The Crusaders opened their half of the first by scoring the
game's first run on a wild pitch that allowed Gilbert to
reach home after leading off the inning with a walk.
SU tacked on another run the very next inning when Clark led off
with a single and later came around to score on a RBI groundout off
the bat of Stephanie Chlebove (Northampton, Pa./Northampton
Area).
It remained a 2-0 SU lead until the bottom of the fifth when
Susquehanna plated an insurance run on Neveroski's RBI single
to right field.
Hoffman worked out of trouble in the sixth and gave up a leadoff
single in the seventh before recording the final three outs of the
inning.
The Crusaders are back in action on Thursday with a doubleheader at
Wilkes starting at 3 p.m. The team returns home on Saturday to host
Juniata in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The team's
senior members will be honored prior to the start of the game.
