Murphy (Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei), Alyssa Cantalini
(Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic Secondary) and
Ashley Cole (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) have
all been named All-Region players by the National Fastpitch Coaches
Association, announced Friday afternoon.
Murphy was named to the Second Team while Cantalini and Cole
picked up Third-Team recognition for the 20th-ranked
Crusaders. The trio was part of six Landmark Conference players who
were named to All-Region teams.
Murphy, who was just recently named the Landmark Conference Player
of the Year, is currently batting .346 through 42 games. She has a
team-leading 37 runs scored to go along with 44 hits, 29 RBI and a
team-leading 23 stolen bases in 25 attempts. Of Murphy's 44
hits, eight have been for extra bases with five doubles, two
triples and one home run.
Fellow All-Landmark Conference player Cantalini leads the team
with her .377 batting average. She also leads the team in hits
(49), home runs (6), RBI (34) and slugging percentage (.692). She
has started all but one of the 40 games in which she's played
and has a .971 fielding percentage as the team's regular
third baseman.
Finally, Cole earned Third-Team honors after having just been
named the Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year. Cole leads the
team with her 15 wins and 1.45 ERA. She has racked up a
team-leading 113 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a
.186 batting average. Cole has walked just 12 batters all season
and has tossed 14 complete games, six shutouts and also leads the
team with three saves.
The Crusaders are currently in the midst of the NCAA Tournament
after earning a bid by winning the Landmark Conference title for
the first time in program history. SU opened tournament play with a
1-0 win over Farmingdale State on Thursday night before falling 3-0
to No., 15 Virginia Wesleyan on Friday evening.
