SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The 2013 season continues for the
Susquehanna softball team as the Crusaders defeated Kean 1-0 on
Saturday afternoon before storms moved through the Montclair area,
pushing SU's 4 p.m. game against De Sales back to Sunday.
The Crusaders (39-8) will now take on the Bulldogs at a time to be
announced.
Sarah Hoffman (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley)
started the game for SU and went 4.2 scoreless innings and left
with the game knotted at zero. Ashley Cole (Carle Place,
N.Y./Carle Place) came in to pitch the final 2.1 innings
and got credit for the win.
As has been the trend for SU over the past three days, it was a
scoreless game through six innings. Brittany Devlin
(Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East) picked up
Susquehanna's first hit of the game, a leadoff single in the
second inning. Kathryn Gilbert (Mechanicsburg,
Pa./Cumberland Valley) came up with a hit in the top of
the third that sent Brianna Murphy (Hazlet, N.J./Mater
Dei) to second but she was left on second base at the end
of the inning.
Cole entered the game in the bottom of the fifth with runners on
second and third and two outs but Kean's Jillian Martin was
picked off at third base to quickly erase the Cougars'
(28-91-1) scoring threat.
In the top of the seventh, pinch hitter Amanda Neveroski
(Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) worked a one-out walk
and Larissa Luu (Montandon, Pa./Milton) followed
with a single to shallow left center to put runners on first and
second with one out. Anna Heggenstaller
(Liverpool, Pa./Greenwood) then knocked a single to left
field to load the bases for Murphy.
Murphy proceeded to hit a sac fly to right field to give SU the
1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Cole retired the
side in order to end the game.
