SCRANTON, Pa. – The Susquehanna field hockey team recorded its second shutout of the season with 2-0 road victory over Marywood on Wednesday night. With the win, SU has now won five of its last six games.
The Crusaders (5-2) used two second-half goals to grab the victory. Susquehanna's defense held the Pacers (0-6) to just nine shots all game and SU took 10 penalty corners to Marywood's two. Goalie Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern) was a key part of that defensive effort as she tallied five saves in her 70 minutes of action.
Katherine Millett (Auburn, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) accounted for five of her team's 16 shots and scored SU's first goal of the game, which proved to be the game winner.
The Crusaders recorded the first six shots of the game, all coming in a 13-minute span. By the time the first half came to a close, SU had doubled up the Pacers in shots, 8-4, but the game remained scoreless.
That changed five minutes into the second half when Millett directed a Tessa Woodring (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) pass past the Marywood goalie for a 1-0 Susquehanna lead. Less than five minutes later SU saw that lead increase to two when Lauren Cram (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) netted a goal, assisted by Emily Novakovich (Saratoga, Calif. / Lynbrook) with 45:50 on the clock for a 2-0 game.
Susquehanna held Marywood without a shot for the final eight minutes of the game to preserve the shutout.
This was the first meeting between the schools since 2003 when SU blanked the Pacers 7-0.
The Crusaders return home on Saturday, Sept. 21 to host Ithaca at 3 p.m.
