SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna men's soccer sophomore defender Samuel Tana (Baldwin, Md. / St. Paul's) netted the match's first goal in the 17th minute but the Crusaders were held scoreless the remainder of the game and ended in a 1-1 double overtime draw with non-conference foe Lebanon Valley on Wednesday evening.
The Crusaders (4-1-1) got on the board when senior Andrew Murphy (Natick, Mass. / Natick) sent a set-piece pass from 25 yards out into the box and Tana flicked in the goal to give SU the early lead.
Neither team would score the remainder of the opening half, as SU outshot Lebanon Valley 5-2 in the first period.
But in the second half, the Dutchmen (4-1-2) netted the equalizer in the 67th minute. Jim Fisher blasted in the tying goal on a rebound following a shot off the crossbar for Lebanon Valley.
Again, SU outshot the Dutchmen 7-6 in the second half but neither squad could net another goal as the match headed to overtime.
The Dutchmen outshot SU 3-2 in the first overtime, while SU countered with the second session's only two shots. Unfortunately, the Crusaders could not find the back of the net as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area), the reigning Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Week, played all 110 minutes, making two saves.
Offensively, junior David Trank (Mendham, N.J. / West Morris Mendham) led SU with four shots off the bench.
Senior Patrick Fry (Denver, Colo. / Colorado Academy) added three shots as the Crusaders held a 16-11 advantage in shots over the Dutchmen.
SU hosts Merchant Marine on Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Landmark Conference opener for both squads.
