SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Playing the first Landmark Conference
match of 2013, Susquehanna's men's soccer squad fell to
visiting Merchant Marine Academy 2-1 in overtime Saturday
afternoon.
In the opening half, Merchant Marine scored in the
12th minute on their second shot of the game to jump out
1-0, which remained the score at halftime.
Despite trailing at intermission, the Crusaders (4-2-1, 0-1)
outshot the Mariners 9-8 and had the advantage in corners, 5-2,
during the first half.
Both teams traded scoring opportunities in the second half, but
it was SU that found the back of the net in the 75th
minute as senior Patrick Fry (Denver, Colo. / Colorado
Academy) scored the equalizer off a feed into the box from
junior David Trank (Mendham, N.J. / West Morris
Mendham).
Unfortunately, in overtime the Mariners' Dan
Weldon took the ball up the sideline and fired in the
game-winner from 20 yards out into the upper corner in the
97th minute to give Merchant Marine (4-4, 1-0) the
conference win.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa. /
Selinsgrove Area) was charged with the loss, playing the
entire match while making three saves.
SU outshot Merchant Marine 20-13 in a physical match that
featured 23 total fouls, three yellow cards and one red card as the
Mariners' assistant coach was ejected in the second half for
arguing with the official.
The Crusaders will look to bounce back at Elizabethtown on
Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. Last season, SU defeated the Blue
Jays for the first time, with the rivalry dating back to 1960.
