SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna field hockey team could
not hold on to a 1-0 halftime lead and fell to Ithaca College 2-1
on Sunday afternoon.
The Crusaders (5-3) almost tripled the Bombers (6-1) in shots,
30-12, with 20 of those shots coming in the first half. However,
after being held to only two first-half shots, Ithaca broke out for
10 shots and two goals over the final 35 minutes of play to grab
the win in come-from-behind fashion.
Brodie Ercole (Oakmont, Pa./Lewisburg Area) led
all players with eight shots while Erica Reichart
(Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) added three and
accounted for the lone SU goal of the game. Goalie Margaret
Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern) notched three saves on the
afternoon.
The Crusaders' first shot of the day came less than two
minutes into the game and with 6:06 on the clock, Susquehanna took
its first of two penalty strokes on the day. The second stroke came
at the 28:46 mark as Reichart took the shot and knocked the ball
past Bomber goalie Katie Lass for the 1-0 SU lead, which remained
the score at halftime.
Ithaca opened the second half by taking four shots within a
five-minute span and was able to turn its sixth shot of the half
into a goal directly following a penalty corner.
With just under two minutes to play in regulation, it remained a
1-1 game before Ithaca's Katie Kennedy collected a rebound
off an Olivia Salindong pass and directed it past Ruth for the 2-1
Bombers lead.
The Crusaders managed to fire off one more shot following a
penalty corner as time expired but Lass made the save to end the
game.
SU begins a three-game road stretch on Sept. 25 with a 7 p.m. game
at Lebanon Valley.
