SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Nothing like waiting until the last minute, at least as far as the Susquehanna women's soccer team is concerned. The Crusaders scored in the 89th minute of regulation in its game against Wilkes and went on to play to a 1-1 tie.
SU (1-6-1) held a five-win Wilkes team scoreless for the final 85 minutes and came up with a timely goal just as time was about to expire en route to its first tie of the season.
Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood/Hiram) netted a goal with 88:12 on the clock to help force overtime where the Colonels (5-2-2) were unable to capitalize on their five shots.
Susquehanna goalie Rachel Norbuts (Monroeville, N.J./Woodstown) finished with seven saves and moved into sole possession of second place all-time in SU history with 247 stops.
In total, Wilkes took 16 shots to Susquehanna's three and had six corner kicks while holding the Crusaders without a single corner the entire night.
The Colonels' Alicia Roberts scored an unassisted goal from 20 yards out in the 25th minute of the game and it remained 1-0 at the midway point.
It stayed 1-0 for the majority of the second half. The Crusaders took only two shots in half but it was the second shot that proved to be the difference when a quick pass from Angela Amato (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) found Zuponcic's feet. Zuponcic promptly directed the ball past Wilkes goalie Kristy Colangelo for the equalizer.
The game was sent into overtime and while Wilkes was able to fire off five shots while holding SU to one, neither team found the back of the net to end the game in a tie.
The Crusaders remain at home to host Moravian on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the teams' Landmark Conference opener.
